Employer's Offer Rejected by a vote of 98.1% - Waterville TG Back at the Negotiating Table this Morning

    ST-JEAN-SUR-RICHELIEU, QC, Oct. 6 /CNW Telbec/ - Yesterday, 98.1% of
Waterville TG's 800 unionized workers rejected management's latest offer. The
union and the company met this morning to pursue negotiations. "Our bargaining
committee has received a clear mandate. Although aware of the economic
difficulties currently affecting the industry, our members believe there is
room for improvement. They will not be made to pay for the company's
reorganization. With the offers currently on the table regarding job minimum,
the workers will end up financing the reinvestment. The employer needs to redo
his homework", declared Roch Drapeau, president of local section 696 of the
Syndicat des Métallos (FTQ).
The union has been negotiating for one month in accordance with
provisions stated in the 6-year collective agreement which plans for salaries
to be renegotiated after a period of three years including the right to strike
and to lock-out. "We are asking the employer to provide a long-term guarantee
of the present $44 million investment, which received support from local
authorities but has yet to be approved by head office. We are asking for
better conditions in terms of early retirement or voluntary redundancy in the
event of a layoff. Furthermore, we are asking for decent salary increases for
those who will remain on the job. Our people have plainly rejected the lump
sum payment proposal. And finally, we are asking the company to reduce its job
minimum demands. Until now, negotiations have been progressing well. We are
confident", stated Dominic Lemieux, representative for the Syndicat des
Métallos (FTQ).
Waterville TG provides employment for 800 workers. They manufacture
automotive weatherstrips.
