Elmwood School student recipient of Canada's Top 20 Under 20(TM)

OTTAWA, June 5 /CNW Telbec/ - Elmwood School Head girl Prashanti Baskaran
has been named one of Canada's Top 20 Under 20(TM) in a national award
ceremony in Toronto. She is the only Ottawa resident to receive this
prestigious award.
Top 20 Under 20(TM) is a national youth awards program presented by Youth
in Motion. It honours young Canadians who have demonstrated a significant
level of achievement, innovation and leadership and have not yet reached the
age of 20. The assessment criteria look beyond academics to specific skills
that have a positive impact on the everyday life of the community.
"I am thrilled to be a recipient of the Top 20 Under 20," said
Ms. Baskaran. "Being awarded not only on my academic merit, but on leadership
and community involvement as well, means a great deal to me."
The focus for the program is a celebration of the leadership and
innovation potential of the recipients, qualities Elmwood strives to develop
through its emphasis on global and community involvement.
When Ms. Baskaran is not busy maintaining her exceptional academic (above
90 per cent) standing and responsibilities as head girl at Elmwood School, she
immerses herself as a volunteer for Shepherd's of Good Hope, The Mission,
Glebe Center, and Centrepointe Gabriel Pharmacy. She also works in the summer
at the Heart Institute where she has conducted a research project in
Cardiology. This summer Ms. Baskaran will work for the Ottawa Health Research
Institute as a researcher.
"We are very proud to have one of our students named to the Top 20 Under
20" said Suzana Szymanski, Acting Head of Elmwood School. "At Elmwood School,
our curriculum advocates academic excellence, global citizenship, leadership,
and community involvement. Encouraging students to achieve both academically
and in the global community is a core value to Elmwood, so we are thrilled
Ms. Baskaran is being awarded on this basis."
Ms. Baskaran has been the recipient of many awards and scholarships this
year, including Bronze Medal at the Canada Wide Science Fair, Gold Medal at
the Regional Ottawa Science Fair, Silver Medal at the Sanofi Aventis Science
Awards, Silver Medal - special award from the Biomedical Association, and
Quality of Life Student Research Award: Institute of Musculoskeletal Health
