Educations Matters - Citizens Grill Candidates Monday

TORONTO, Sept. 16 /CNW/ - Voters from resident associations, parents,
school councils, student bodies, ESL programs and etho-racial service
organizations will be lining up at the York Memorial C.I. cafeteria
microphones Monday night. The occasion? To ask Paul Ferreira (NDP MPP York
South Weston) and other candidates how they plan to "fix" public education in
that community.
Like all Ontario's 72 school boards, the public and Catholic boards in
Toronto have dipped heavily into (and in some cases virtually depleted) their
emergency reserve funds in order to pay for school operations over the past
two years. And like others, they are faced with extremely hard choices this
fall as they prepare for post-election budgeting.
The maintenance backlog alone is now estimated to be well over
$10 billion province-wide.
"Our board faces a shortfall of $122 million this coming year," reports
Chris Bolton, a Toronto District School Board Trustee who will attend a
similar meeting his school ward council has organized for early October in

All party candidates will debate Public Education on:

        Monday, September 17, 2007
        York Memorial Collegiate Institute CAFETERIA
        2690 Eglinton Ave West
        (Eglinton & Keele St/Trethewey Drive)
        Parking behind 2 Trethewey Drive
