Dr. Richard Leakey, world-famous paleo-anthropologist and influential environmentalist, speaks about the Environment and the Future

    EDMONTON, March 23 /CNW/ - On April 24, 2007, the Edmonton Space &
Science Foundation and TELUS World of Science - Edmonton will host the
world-famous paleo-anthropologist and environmentalist, Dr. Richard Leakey,
for his first-ever speaking event in Canada. Dr. Leakey has been profiled on
60 Minutes and was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Greatest Minds of the
20th Century. Dr. Leakey's talk Global Challenges: The Environment and the
Future will take place at the Shaw Conference Centre at 6:30 pm.
Dr. Leakey was invited by TELUS World of Science - Edmonton under the
auspices of its Brightest Minds Program. The Program aims to bring the world's
best and brightest individuals in science and technology to the Science Centre
to provide Edmontonians the chance to meet, learn from, and to be inspired by
these talented and highly-acclaimed individuals. "The Edmonton Space & Science
Foundation, which operates TELUS World of Science, strives to provide Edmonton
area residents with unique opportunities to explore and understand the world
around them; our Brightest Minds Program is one of our leading initiatives in
this direction. Dr. Leakey perfectly epitomizes the Brightest Minds Program
and we couldn't be more thrilled to be able to welcome him to Edmonton," said
George Smith, President & CEO, Edmonton Space & Science Foundation / TELUS
World of Science - Edmonton.
Mostly, presentations by Brightest Minds speakers are held at TELUS World
of Science; however, due to extensive interest from broad Edmonton audiences
in hearing Dr. Leakey speak, TELUS World of Science chose to host the event at
the Shaw Conference Centre. "We wanted to give as many Edmontonians as
possible, and Canadians in general, this unique opportunity to hear Dr.
Leakey's amazing talk, and the only way to do this was to consider a larger
venue. We expect it to be a spell-binding evening as Dr. Leakey is known to be
a gifted speaker," says George Smith.
In addition to the April 24th appearance, Dr. Leakey will give a
presentation on April 25th to 2,500 grade 7 - 9 Edmonton and area students at
the Shaw Conference Centre.
Dr. Leakey is a global thinker and influential environmentalist who has
been making international headlines for more than 30 years. In 2005, Dr.
Leakey organized an Environmental Forum which gathered more than 100 of the
world's top scientists and government officials to discuss the implementation
of major international initiatives - addressing solutions to such global
issues as climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable development. During
his presentations in Edmonton, Dr. Leakey will share his stories from this
forum and his views on the future.
