HAMILTON, ON, April 12 /CNW/ - From April 12-14, the City of Hamilton
will play host to the 25th Annual "Docs on Ice" tournament in celebration of
its Silver Anniversary. This year the tournament has designated the Mark
Preece Family House as a recipient of charitable proceeds raised from this
Walter Gretzky will act as Honorary Chairman of the Docs on Ice 25th
Annual Tournament. Other special guests include hockey legends Johnny Bower,
Harry Howell and guest speaker Darryl Sittler.
The first Docs on Ice tournament was held in Peterborough in 1983 as a
tribute to the memory of Dr. Peter Howes, an avid hockey player. Now in its
25th year, the tournament hosts over 45 teams, organized in nine divisions,
consisting of nearly 700 physician colleagues from across the province. "They
come together to share the excitement of sportsmanship and renewal of
friendship," says this year's tournament chair, Dr. Walter Owsianik. "Each
year the Docs on Ice Charity Hockey Tournament is held in a different city to
re-affirm the founding principles of Charity, Camaraderie and Sportsmanship."
Equally important is the second aspect to the tournament that has evolved
- raising funds for local charities. The Mark Preece Family House project is
honored to be the recipient of the Docs on Ice support this year.
Dr. Mark Preece had a prominent role in Critical Care medicine in
Hamilton until his untimely death from cancer in 1997. His friends and
colleagues founded a charitable organization to build a residence for families
of adult patients undergoing acute care in Hamilton area hospitals. The Mark
Preece Family House will celebrate his life, and provide close, safe, and
affordable accommodation and support these families.
The House will be located adjacent to the Hamilton General Hospital,
which is a centre for critical cardiac, vascular, trauma and burn care.
Hamilton Health Sciences supports the development of the Mark Preece Family
House and has provided the site for the house on Barton Street, a block from
the Hamilton General Hospital. This service will provide families with a place
to stay, close to the bedside when times are critical.
