Detect, Prevent and Invest at the Right Moment - OSMOS Technology's Real-Time Monitoring of Bridge and Overpass Behaviour

    MONTREAL, Oct. 30 /CNW Telbec/ - At a time of massive investment in the
renovation and modernization of Quebec's bridges and overpasses, a technology
to permit real-time monitoring and preventive management of all such
infrastructure already exists. OSMOS is the world leader in structure
monitoring. Its fibre optic (optical cord) technology detects and prevents
behavioural problems and provides valuable information for the ongoing safety
and preventive management of structures such as overpasses.
    Bernard Hodac, President and Chief Executive Officer of the OSMOS Group,
maintains that the enormous investments required for current upgrades of
infrastructure by the Government of Quebec and other governments throughout
the world, should be based on a solid knowledge of their condition. "Our
state-of-the-art technology, which provides real-time measurements of
structural behaviour, lets us administer the maintenance process more
efficiently and provides managers with reliable and objective data for guiding
their investment priorities and avoiding nonessential investments," said
Mr. Hodac.

    A specific example

    The Champlain Bridge--a vital transportation artery and one of North
America's longest spans--is subject to extreme operating conditions and has
been under round-the-clock monitoring with OSMOS-developed technology since
May 2006. This valuable management tool allows Jacques Cartier and Champlain
Bridges Incorporated to assess the structure's status in real time.
    In a pilot project for the City of Montreal, OSMOS technology has also
been used to document and to monitor the behaviour of the Girouard Bridge,
before, during and after the replacement of a portion of the deck of this
axial route. Other projects are under discussion in Quebec City. Throughout
the world, some 500 major structures, including the Eiffel Tower, the Chunnel
and the Manhattan Bridge, are being monitored by OSMOS technologies.

    OSMOS technologies

    The system developed by OSMOS Group's engineers employs fibre optics
(optical cord), with sensors attached to structures permitting constant
recording of micro-buckling activity. Optical cord is a highly accurate system
for measuring any buckling occurring throughout entire structural components,
such as a bridge, a building, a tower and so forth. This system is one of a
kind because it can simultaneously measure static and dynamic effects with
maximum precision. All data are recorded and can be accessed over the Web in
real-time. Each sensor is equipped with its own alarm threshold, which
instantly transmits a message, when triggered, to the structure's
superintendent. This system thus provides early detection of any change in a
structure's behaviour and monitors the projected evolution of such change.
    The OSMOS Group's partner in Quebec is TekniKa HBA, a multidisciplinary
firm with 700 employees working in fields of consulting engineering and
construction engineering.
