Cyclists reach out at Chinatown Festival

TORONTO, Sept. 8, 2011 /CNW/ - It has been an action packed summer for the Bike Host program, which matches newcomers who ride a bicycle with Canadian mentors. Bike Host continues its activities this weekend with a booth at the Toronto Chinatown Festival, on Saturday September 10, from 9 am to 9pm. Bike Host participants will be on hand with information about the program and about safe cycling. There will also be a chance to win some great prizes!

The innovative program is carried out by CultureLink Settlement Services, in partnership with the Toronto Cyclists Union. Participants learn about cyclists' rights and responsibilities, while contributing to group projects and getting to know the city.

"Bike Host is a great program. It is an opportunity to get engaged with Canadian society, build networks, and gain Canadian experience. It helps me embrace my new life in a new country faster and better," says He (Leo) Huang. He immigrated to Canada half a year ago from China, where he worked as a marketing manager.

Marion Oliver has been a Bike Host mentor and has enjoyed taking part in community outreach opportunities. "I have seen how universal the attraction to cycling is," she says. "I'm looking forward to the upcoming Chinatown festival and spreading the word about Bike Host!"

Toronto Chinatown Festival 2011 will be held on Saturday, September 10th and Sunday, September 11th, 2011 on the east side of Spadina Avenue, between Dundas Street West and College Street.

Bike Host is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
