HALIFAX, Oct. 9 /CNW/ - The president of CUPE Nova Scotia, Danny
Cavanagh, is urging his 16,000 members to help defeat the Harper government,
and says the best way to do that is to support Jack Layton and the NDP.
Says Cavanagh, "We have been fighting for our jobs and good public
services on a continual basis for far too long under the two mainstream
parties. This is a golden opportunity to change the status quo.
"We're seeing a dramatic rise in support for the NDP in this election. No
other party or leader has made an eight percent increase in public opinion
polls. Here in Nova Scotia, Layton is standing up for CUPE flight attendants,
workers who've lost their jobs in the manufacturing and forestry sectors, and
child care workers who desperately need a wage increase.
"In short, Layton is standing up for public services and decent-paying,
unionized jobs," says Cavanagh.
The Executive Board of CUPE Nova Scotia has endorsed the NDP as the party
of choice for working families.
Cavanagh says, "While some of our membership will have difficulty with us
taking this strong stand, as leaders in this union we believe it is our
obligation to fight for social justice for all Canadians. Jack Layton and the
NDP have earned the support of working women and men across Canada."
