-- Most-watched original Canadian drama of the year --
-- Almost 3 million Canadians watch some or all of the broadcast --
TORONTO, Feb. 11 /CNW/ - Last night, the premiere of the CTV Original
Movie Mayerthorpe marked the latest CTV film to break the one million viewer
mark when an average audience of 1.3 million viewers watched the broadcast,
data from BBM Nielsen Media Research confirmed today.(*) Against The Grammy
Awards (1.65 million, CBS/Global), the film peaked at 1.5 million viewers to
become the No. 2 program of the night. Mayerthorpe was watched in whole or in
part by almost three million viewers across the country. The most-watched
original Canadian drama of the year, Mayerthorpe is a testament to the
strength and dedication of the families of four slain RCMP officers who lost
their lives at the hands of heavily-armed, habitual criminal James Roszko, who
ambushed them on his farm near Mayerthorpe, AB.
The producers and CTV thank the courageous family members for their
valuable input during the production process, which helped set the tone for
the movie and allowed it to be as accurate as possible, both historically and
Starring Gemini Award-winning actor Henry Czerny (The Tudors, Fido) and
Brian Markinson (Charlie Wilson's War, Eight Days to Live), Mayerthorpe is a
chilling dramatization of the events leading up to March 3, 2005, when RCMP
officers Anthony Gordon, 28, Leo Johnston, 32, Brock Myrol, 29, and Peter
Schiemann, 29, were murdered by James Rozko. The horrifying event was the
RCMP's greatest loss of life in a single day and left an entire country asking
"why"? As the three-year anniversary of the tragedy nears on March 3, the
question still remains.
The broadcast followed a poll released last week by CTV and The Strategic
Counsel that indicates that nationally, three in four people surveyed believe
that the Canadian justice system is too lenient on repeat offenders, with
50 per cent saying the justice system is "much too lenient."
Mayerthorpe was developed and produced by SEVEN24 Films and Slanted Wheel
Entertainment in association with CTV.
