CRTC seeks comments on the new Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services

    OTTAWA and GATINEAU, Aug. 22 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Radio-television
and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today issued a public notice asking
for input on the nature, governance, structure and mandate of the Commissioner
for Complaints for Telecommunications Services (CCTS).
In April 2007, the federal government called on the telecommunications
industry to establish an independent, industry-funded agency to resolve
complaints from consumers and small businesses. This new agency (the CCTS) was
set up by industry members on a provisional basis and began operations on
July 23, 2007. On that same date, the agency's founding members filed a
proposal with the CRTC describing its organization, which the Commission will
consider during a public consultation starting on November 14, 2007, in
Gatineau.
In a second public notice issued today, the Commission called for
comments on its intention to delegate its powers to investigate complaints
arising from unsolicited telemarketing calls. During the public consultation
on the CCTS, the Commission will hear views as to whether it should delegate
its investigative powers regarding such complaints to this agency.
Interested parties are invited to submit their comments on either or both
of these issues by October 1, 2007. They may do so by filling out the online
form, or by writing to the Secretary General, CRTC, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0N2,
or by fax, at 819-994-0218.
