Crate and Barrel was founded in 1962 by Gordon and Carole Segal. The
newly married couple felt there must be other young couples like themselves,
with more taste than money. They imported well-designed tabletop products from
Europe, and with no extra budget for fixtures, displayed the items on the
shipping crates and barrels in which they had arrived. In the 46 years since
the first Crate and Barrel opened, the family of stores has consistently
expanded and is today considered a leader in the home furnishings industry,
having been awarded many honours in design, architecture and innovative retail
concepts. With the opening of the Toronto store, Crate and Barrel now has 163
stores. For further information on Crate and Barrel Canada, please visit
