Court Bulletin - Supervisor fined $1,800 after interfering with an inspector

    BRAMPTON, ON, Feb. 11 /CNW/ - Mario Piacente, a supervisor with Sky-High
Erectors Ltd. was fined $1,800 on February 10, 2009, for a violation of the
Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), after interfering with a Ministry
of Labour health and safety inspector.
On September 19, 2008, an inspector with the Ministry of Labour had just
issued a stop work order at a construction site on Tahoe Blvd. in Mississauga.
While in his parked van completing his paperwork, the inspector was approached
by Mr. Piacente, who, after words, flung a three-inch ring binder through the
open window of the inspector's van. The binder flew in front of the inspector
and out an open window on the opposite side of the van.
Mario Piacente pleaded guilty under the OHSA to the offence of hindering,
obstructing, molesting or interfering with an inspector in performance of his
duty under the OHSA.
The fine was imposed by Justice of the Peace M. McLeod. In addition to
the fine, the court also imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge on the
total, as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is credited
to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.
