Correction of errors in yesterday's Toronto Star

    TORONTO, Feb. 13 /CNW/ - The Toronto Star yesterday included an item on
page 4 of the Greater Toronto section that contains errors about the City's
proposed 2009 operating budget. The following information is provided for
    The caption at the top of the item reads "Here's how much the increases
announced Tuesday may cost a typical household this year:" This is incorrect
as the fees for two of the items listed in the article do not have increases
in the 2009 proposed budget. In addition, one of fees listed is incorrect and
another was not announced on Tuesday and is not part of the City's operating

    Details concerning these errors are as follows:

    Garbage fees - the photo caption states the fee for a medium bin is $133.
The actual fee is $39. The photo caption uses the words "new charge". This fee
was implemented in 2008 and there are no increases to garbage fees in the
proposed 2009 operating budget. This service was previously paid for through
the property tax. When this fee was implemented the cost of the service came
off the property tax and the average cost of providing the service ($209 per
year) was credited toward the cost of the size of bin that residents choose
for their service. The fee pays for garbage, recycling, green bin, litter
prevention, landfill management and other diversion programs.

    Vehicle registration - the photo caption uses the words "new charge" and
notes the cost of the vehicle registration fee for two vehicles. The fee was
implemented in 2008 and there are no increases to the fee in the proposed 2009
operating budget. The fee for one vehicle remains at $60.

    Water rate increase - this was not announced on Tuesday and is not part
of the proposed 2009 Operating budget. The water rate was set separately by
Toronto City Council in December of 2008. All of the money collected from
water bills is used for the maintenance of the City's water services and for
the water used by city residents and businesses.

    The City wishes to draw the public's attention to the list of City
services and programs available to residents and business during the
