Concordia University Admits To Illegal Teleconference Meeting by Calling Another Board Meeting

MONTREAL, Aug. 27 /CNW Telbec/ - The Concordia University administration
has called a special Board of Governors meeting for Friday, August 29th in its
fifth attempt to pass a $1000 international tuition fee hike. The meeting is
in response to a Quebec Superior Court ruling last week that ordered the
university to temporarily halt the collection of over $1.4 million in
international tuition fees. The court's ruling upheld allegations by the
Concordia Student Union that the closed door, teleconference meeting at which
the fee was originally passed in June was potentially illegal.
The agenda for this Friday's meeting will require governors to vote for a
second time on all of the motions passed during the teleconference meeting
held in June. Although Concordia administrators could have waited to hear the
court's final ruling on the legality of their teleconference meeting they have
opted to hold this special meeting before the Labor Day weekend and the
beginning of the fall semester. This move is being seen by students and
faculty as yet another tactic to sidestep the strong opposition to these
measures that exists within the Concordia community.
"It's a sad day when students have to bring their university to court to
ensure that its administration is following the rules," said Keyana Kashfi,
President of the Concordia Student Union. "This emergency meeting proves that
Concordia administrators know they are guilty of holding a potentially illegal
teleconference meeting despite objections from students beforehand."
