OTTAWA, Jan. 8 /CNW Telbec/ - Cathedral Arts, the arts programme at
Ottawa's Christ Church Cathedral, will present a Robbie Burns concert on
Sunday, January 25th at 8:00 PM at the cathedral, 420 Sparks Street (at
Bronson). My Love is like a Red, Red Rose commemorates the 250th anniversary
of the birth of the prolific Scottish poet.
Newfoundland native, Meredith Hall, and members of La Nef from Montreal,
will pay homage to the fascinating poet with a selection of songs and
instrumental pieces on the theme of love. Instruments include the lute,
baroque guitar, viola de gamba, bagpipe, harp and percussion.
Ms. Hall will sing in the Scottish and English dialects of the period,
interpreting the texts of Robert Burns with striking aptitude and a rare
intensity. This much-celebrated soprano has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon
Archiv, Philips, Naxos, Dorian, NPR Records and CBC Records with such groups
as Les Musiciens du Louvre, Le Concert Spirituel, The Musicians of the Globe,
The Toronto Consort and Tafelmusik.
The Cathedral Arts concert will support the Dalhousie Food Cupboard, a
member of the Ottawa Food Bank. Winter is a particularly difficult period for
those in need. "We are very grateful for this help. There is definitely an
increase in the number of families seeking our help and we are challenged to
keep up with the demands," said Harold Jones, chairman of the Board of the
Dalhousie Food Cupboard.
The public is invited to drop off non-perishable items at Christ Church
Cathedral on Saturday, January 24th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM; and, on Sunday,
January 25th from 2:00 PM until concert-time at 8:00 PM. Financial donations
would also be welcome by cheque, payable to Christ Church Cathedral, with a
memo line: Dalhousie Food Cupboard), or, by cash, at the concert only.
Cathedral Arts also announced that it will donate 10% of the ticket
revenue from the concert to the Dalhousie Food Cupboard.
