Commissioner Cavoukian receives International Privacy Award

TORONTO, June 9, 2011 /CNW/ - Ontario's Information and Privacy Commissioner, Dr. Ann Cavoukian, today received a prestigious international privacy award for her "pioneering" work in the area of privacy protection.

Commissioner Cavoukian received the 2011 Kristian Beckman Award from the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), an organization that represents IT Societies from over 50 countries around the globe. Dr. Cavoukian is the first Canadian to receive this noteworthy award, which is granted annually to an individual who has "significantly contributed to the development of information security, especially achievements with an international perspective." Established in 1992, the award commemorates the first chair of the IFIP committee, Kristian Beckman from Sweden.

The award was presented by Professor Kai Rannenburg, Chair of the IFIP Technical Committee and T-Mobile Chair of Mobile Business & Multilateral Security, Goethe University, Frankfurt, via videoconference from Lucerne, Switzerland. Dr. Rannenberg said that Commissioner Cavoukian was given the award to honour her "pioneering work for the concept Privacy by Design and incessant activity as the knowledge bridge between different stakeholders and parties to make societal sense of privacy protection in modern international environments."

Serving her third term as Commissioner, Dr. Cavoukian is recognized as one of the leading privacy experts in the world. An avowed believer in the role that technology can play in protecting privacy, Dr. Cavoukian's leadership has seen her office develop a number of tools and procedures to ensure that privacy is protected in Ontario - and around the world. Dr. Cavoukian is well known for her creation of "Privacy by Design" - the requirement to proactively embed privacy directly into technologies, accountable business practices, and networked infrastructure, as the default condition.
