Coalition of Canadian Airports and Duty Free Operators commends Budget 2009

    OTTAWA, Jan. 30 /CNW Telbec/ - The Arrivals Duty-Free Coalition today
praised the federal government for its commitment to work in consultation with
industry stakeholders and provinces to explore the sale of duty and tax-free
goods to international passengers arriving at Canada's major airports.
"By committing to examining this issue, Budget 2009 has taken an
important first step to increase the global competitiveness of Canada's major
airports," said Richard Rendeck, Co-Chair of the Arrivals Duty-Free Coalition.
Unlike many foreign airports, Canadian airports do not allow the sale of
duty and tax-free goods to international passengers arriving in Canada. Over
the years, Canadian airports have seen sales of duty-free goods drop as
international travellers now have the option to buy duty-free upon arriving at
their destination. Coalition Co-Chair Susan Stiene said, "The implementation
of arrivals duty-free in foreign airports has hurt our ability to compete and
our domestic businesses have suffered. We applaud the federal government for
offering us the opportunity to work with federal and provincial governments to
level the playing field, make us more competitive, and provide travellers with
the option of spending their money in Canada."

The Arrivals Duty-Free Coalition is a group of Canadian airports and duty
free operators who are committed to delivering a world-class retail experience
for travellers at Canadian airports.
