CMA Alberta and CIPFA Launch Unique Dual-Designation Program to Improve Public Sector Fiscal Management and Leadership

EDMONTON, Feb. 27 /CNW/ - Alberta government employees can now receive
comprehensive public sector financial management and strategic leadership
training through a new dual-designation program developed by two leading
international accounting bodies in consultation with the Office of the
Comptroller General of Canada. The program, which was successfully launched in
Ottawa in 2006, is now being offered in Edmonton starting September 2008.
Developed through extensive consultation with former Comptroller General
Charles-Antoine St-Jean and his staff, the CMA Canada/CIPFA dual-designation
program will help ensure senior government employees have the right mix of
skills and expertise needed to deliver world class public finance services in
a professional and accountable manner that the government and the general
public requires of them. This enhanced financial management and accountability
was identified as a key component of the government's commitment to strengthen
public sector management.
Candidates who successfully complete the program will receive a dual
public finance management and professional accounting designation as a
Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Chartered Public Finance Accountant
(CPFA) from the Certified Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada) and
the U.K.-based Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy. This
unique program is being administered by CMA Alberta.
CMA Alberta President and CEO Joy Thomas, MBA, CMA, FCMA says the dual
CMA-CPFA accreditation "will provide significant management accounting and
public finance leadership skills for government financial officials to further
increase the efficiency of managing public funds and the level of
accountability expected by the public."
The Office of the Auditor General-Alberta anticipates the dual
designation will positively impact all levels of government. "We look forward
to working with the Alberta graduates of this program who will possess a
specialized understanding and knowledge of the unique facets of public sector
management. These professionals will be well positioned to provide improved
analysis and advice to all levels of government," says the Office of the
Auditor General-Alberta.
