MONTREAL, April 4 /CNW Telbec/ - Canadian Jewish Congress, Quebec Region
is outraged by the attempted firebombing of the YM-YWHA Ben Weider Jewish
Community Center last night. The Jewish community is relieved that the small
homemade bomb caused no damage or injury but is nevertheless concerned that a
Jewish institution has again been targeted in this way.
"We are stunned at this appalling attack on a Jewish community
institution which is doubly offensive because once again this attack comes as
Jews celebrate Passover" said Joachim Normand, CJC, QR's Executive-Director.
"Every act against a Jewish institution threatens the feeling of safety
and security of the community. This attack comes almost three years to the day
of a firebomb attack that destroyed the library of Montreal's United Talmud
Torah school in 2004. It is inevitable that the attack stirs painful memories
of that heinous crime and of last September's firebombing of the Skver-Toldos
Orthodox Jewish Boy's School on September 2, 2006" added Mr. Normand.
On a related note, CJC, QR is pleased with the Montreal Police
announcement that they have a significant lead in their investigation of the
firebombing at the Skver-Toldos Orthodox Jewish Boys School late last summer.
From the outset Montreal police demonstrated that the incident was being
treated seriously and the announcement of a break in the investigation is a
clear indication of this.
CJC, QR commends the police for their efforts in all of these attacks on
Jewish community institutions and will continue to work with them to ensure
that the perpetrator of last night's attack is eventually apprehended.
