Chill Out in the City of Pickering

PICKERING, ON, July 17 /CNW/ - In response to Environment Canada's
Extreme Heat Advisory for the Greater Toronto Area, the City of Pickering will
be operating a couple of cooling centres to help residents beat the heat. The
cooling centres will remain open for the duration of the weekend or until the
Extreme Heat Advisory is lifted.

    Location Address Hours of Operation
    -------- ------- ------------------

Pickering Recreation Complex 1867 Valley Farm Road 6:00 am - 11:00 pm

    Petticoat Creek Community
     Centre 470 Kingston Road 9:00 am - 9:00 pm

Extreme Heat Advisories are issued when an oppressive air mass is
forecast and the likelihood of deaths may increase due to high temperatures
and other factors. During an Extreme Heat Advisory there may be more
weather-related deaths because the heat has become more severe or is lasting
for a prolonged period of time.
Outdoor activities should be avoided during the hottest times of the day,
from about 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. If one must be outside, they should keep to
the shade and avoid strenuous activity or overexertion. Wearing sunblock with
an SPF rating of 15 or higher on all exposed body areas is recommended. As
well, loose fitting clothing will enable perspiration to evaporate which has a
natural cooling effect; while a hat that covers the top of the head completely
with a visor to shade the face should also be worn.
Keeping hydrated with the right kinds of fluids is strongly advised -
such as water, sports rehydrating drinks or juice. Fruits such as melons,
strawberries and peaches are recommended as they have high water content.
Consumption of beverages with alcohol, caffeine or carbonation should be
minimized or avoided entirely.
The City of Pickering hopes that residents have a safe and enjoyable
summer, but urges that caution and prevention be exercised when dealing with
the extreme heat.
