CHCA welcomes Federal investment in Infoway

OTTAWA, Jan. 28 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Home Care Association (CHCA)
is pleased by the Federal Government's 2009 Budget announcement of $500
million to Canada Health Infoway to encourage greater use of electronic health
records across the system. The CHCA supports funding to Infoway so that
strategic investments in home care technology, including the expansion of the
electronic health record to incorporate home and community care, can be made.
"The implementation of information technology and electronic health
records is critical to enabling health system integration", said Nadine
Henningsen, Executive Director. "Inclusion of home and community care in the
electronic health record is essential to providing safe and effective care and
supporting individuals to live independently in their own homes", she added.
Incorporating home and primary care as essential building blocks for
Canada's electronic health record is one of nine recommendations that emerged
following an eight month initiative by CHCA in 2008 to understand the
potential of, and readiness for, information communication technology in the
home care sector across Canada. The over-riding message in the final report -
Integration through Information Communication Technology for Home Care in
Canada, still resonates today. There needs to be a re-alignment of focus for
information technology to the community where Canadians experience the
majority of their health care and where they want to remain for as long as
CHCA will work with Infoway to support investment in this vital sector of
the health system.
