Chatham-Kent woman to receive Fire Safety Award

TORONTO, June 20 /CNW/ - Janet Cunningham will receive a Fire Safety
Advocate Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at a
ceremony on June 28, 2007 in Toronto. The annual Fire Safety Awards recognize
outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in Ontario.
Janet has been the Executive Director of the Safety Village in
Chatham-Kent for the last five years and has been instrumental in its
development since its infancy. Her first exposure to a Children's Safety
Village came when she worked for the Chatham-Kent United Way. The village was
added to a list of priority projects, however over time, the creation of the
village began to lose momentum. Eventually, it was separated from the United
Way and moved forward through the Safe Communities: Chatham-Kent Steering
Committee, an organized body that Janet created with the support of police and
fire representatives. Demonstrating her commitment to the village's
construction, Janet immersed herself in fundraising, planning, administration,
grant applications, partnership building and networking within the community.
In total, she helped to raise $1 million for the Village before construction
Janet remains a dedicated advocate of safety villages in Ontario. For
three years, she has hosted the Ontario Safety Village Advisory Conferences,
one of which took place at the Ontario Fire College in Gravenhurst.
"Collectively, the community has become a safer place because of Janet's
actions," said Fire Marshal Pat Burke. "By working to create the Village,
Janet has provided an opportunity for young children to learn more about fire
safety and injury prevention in a fun and memorable atmosphere."

Fire departments throughout the province nominated individuals and
organizations for this year's awards; 21 recipients were selected. The
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Monte Kwinter and Fire
Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon ceremony at the Fairmont
Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
