Changing the way patient safety information is shared

'Improving Care Search Centre bringing it all to one place'

EDMONTON, May 3 /CNW/ - For the first time, patient safety and quality improvement information from across Canada and the globe will be available to patients and healthcare providers in one place.

The Improving Care Search Centre, a publicly available web-based search centre developed and powered by the Canadian Patient Safety Institute will provide an easy method for searching information on patient safety and quality improvement generated by organizations from across the country and around the world.

"In a meeting with the VP of a busy hospital I asked what is the one tool we could provide you with that would make access to patient safety information easier," says Hugh MacLeod, CEO, Canadian Patient Safety Institute. "Her answer to me was to have access to one website that would provide all information you need to know about hand hygiene, medication safety or any other patient safety and quality focus. We took the idea to heart and have spent the past seven months building the Improving Care Search Centre." The Improving Care Search Centre will provide users with a personalized experience and access to patient safety advisories, alerts, communities, interventions, tools and resources and provide a direct link to patient safety and quality focused organizations. This platform will enable the sharing of events, experiences and learning to prevent patient safety incidents from reoccurring.

"I am impressed with the search centre and what it will provide the healthcare community," says Isabel Henderson, VP, Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, Alberta Health Services. "Our staff now have access to the learning that has occurred in healthcare organizations around the world. This information will help to support a culture of patient safety and quality."

Information searched on the Improving Care Search Centre is generated by the Improving Care Alliance which is a group of healthcare organizations from around the world who believe in knowledge transfer and information sharing as a pillar of patient safety and quality improvement.

Roisian Boland, Chief Executive Officer, The International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua), says "by joining the Improving Care Alliance, we have the opportunity to share our patient safety and quality information with users from around the world. The Improving Care Search Centre will connect the patient safety world in a way it has never been connected before."

"We see the Improving Care Search Centre as a powerful tool with the ability to change the way information is shared, searched and gathered from sources in the Community Care setting," Says Dr. Ben Chan, CEO of Health Quality Ontario.

The Improving Care Search Centre is being launched on 3 May at 8:30.a.m.MT, 10:30.a.m. ET, 4:30 p.m. CET.   For access please visit
