Currently registered students at Ontario colleges and universities are
invited to participate in CGA Ontario's inaugural One-Hour Accounting
Contest on March 23rd.
TORONTO, March 16 /CNW/ - The Certified General Accountants of Ontario is
hosting its inaugural one-hour, online accounting contest on Friday,
March 23rd, beginning at 4 p.m. The idea is to provide as much access as
possible to Ontario post-secondary students who have an aptitude for
accounting and finance. With two tiers of competition, a total of six
champions will emerge at the end of the hour. The prize pot-which provides
first, second and third prizes of both cash and scholarship towards the CGA
program of professional studies-totals more than $50,000.
In recognition of the significant role Ontario colleges and universities
play in providing accounting and finance education, the academic institution
of the first-place prize winner in each tier will also be awarded $5,000
towards its accounting department.
The student self-selects whether to enter the competition at Tier 1 or
Tier 2. Tier 1 focuses on basic and intermediate finance- and
accounting-related questions; Tier 2 questions are at intermediate and
advanced levels. The contest's questions were created by a certified general
accountant who is a marker in the CGA program of professional studies.
Although the questions have never appeared in any course material (or other
format) they are written at a level comparable to applicable CGA courses. The
contest will run off a system developed by CGA Ontario's information services
The one-hour, online contest is the brainchild of Chris Buyers, manager
of marketing for the Certified General Accountants of Ontario, "Thinking back
to my days as a B.Comm. student, what I would have appreciated is the chance
to compete in a relevant contest that didn't depend on some form of
pre-selection. I'd want minimum hassle in terms of the time and location
required to compete and I'd want there to be some significant prizes as an
incentive, something like immediate cash and more long-term funding for my
studies. Because such a contest didn't exist in my day, I decided to recommend
to CGA Ontario that we provide one for today's crop of potential accounting
Ontario colleges and universities are already promoting the contest and
advance registration by students for the March 23rd competition is currently
in the four figures. Professors in the related departments have been uniformly
positive about the event and are encouraging students to participate. "The
contest is an outstanding way to inform students about the CGA designation,"
indicates Gary Spraakman, an accounting professor at York University's
Atkinson School of Administrative Studies. "I expect the contest will lead
many of our students, particularly the accounting majors, to consider a career
as a CGA, which will certainly enrich their lives."
