VANCOUVER, Sept. 26, 2011 /CNW/ - The Certified General Accountants
Association of Canada (CGA-Canada) is pleased to announce the John
Leslie award recipient for 2011 - James Gaa, PhD, FCGA, and professor
of accounting at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta.
"Business leaders demand a high level of ethics and integrity from the
accounting profession," says Anthony Ariganello, President and CEO of
CGA-Canada. "Dr. Gaa's work in ethics has helped accountants today be
recognized as a trusted resource in society. He is well worthy of this
Dr. Gaa became a CGA in 1989 and sat on a number of accounting and
ethics standards boards. He was awarded the FCGA designation in 1999
and CGA Alberta life membership in 2004. In 2008, Dr. Gaa was included
in a CGA-Canada compiled list of 100 CGAs "who have made a difference."
"I am pleased CGA-Canada has provided me with the opportunity to
contribute to the profession," says Mr. Gaa. "These experiences are
some of the most interesting I've had in my career and I firmly believe
this is the highest honour that a CGA can be granted."
Dr. Gaa earned a PhD in philosophy from Washington University, St. Louis
in 1975 and in accountancy from the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign in 1982. He began teaching at McMaster University in
1980 and in 1995, moved to Edmonton to take a position at the
University of Alberta.
The John Leslie Award was established in 1988 to honour CGA-Canada's founder and first
president. It is awarded to CGAs who have achieved national recognition
for outstanding, business endeavours, public service, charitable
involvement, humanitarian acts, outstanding artistic achievement or
special achievement in overcoming physical adversity.
Founded in 1908, the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada
serves 75,000 Certified General Accountants and students in Canada and
more than 90 countries. Respected accounting and financial management
professionals, CGAs work in industry, finance, government and public
practice. CGA-Canada establishes the designation's certification
requirements and professional standards, offers professional
development, conducts research and advocacy, and represents CGAs
nationally and internationally.
