Certified Management Accountants (CMA) Alberta creates program to help newcomers achieve successful accounting careers in Alberta

EDMONTON, Jan. 28 /CNW/ - Certified Management Accountants (CMA) of
Alberta and the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers are pleased to
announce that the long awaited CMA Accelerated Program for Newcomers begins
January 28th, 2008. The program, which was developed jointly between CMA
Alberta and the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN), addresses
Alberta's labour shortage in professional accounting while providing new
immigrants with the opportunity to improve their English language skills, gain
greater access to accounting and auditing jobs, adapt and improve existing
skills to Canadian standards, and work towards achieving the Certified
Management Accountant (CMA) designation.
Jim Gurnett, Executive Director of the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for
Newcomers, says the Centre sees a number of immigrants who have management
accounting experience from their home countries but have a great deal of
difficulty accessing similar types of employment in Canada. The program is a
welcomed initiative for Gurnett, who says CMA's support for newcomers is
progressive and forward-thinking. "It comes at a critical time as we look to
fill the labour shortage for professional accountants here and abroad," says
CMA Alberta President and CEO Joy Thomas, MBA, FCMA, says the program
prepares newcomers with degrees in the field of accountancy to move more
quickly into management accounting by offering customized programs that
prepare them for a career in Canada. Thomas says, "The CMA Accelerated Program
for Newcomers assists newcomers through the process of qualifying for Canadian
credentials, and prepares them to work towards obtaining the CMA designation."
Upon completion of the program, candidates will be prepared to challenge
the National CMA Entrance Exam.
To further encourage support to newcomers, CMA Alberta is offering a
full-tuition scholarship to the two-year Strategic Leadership Program, the
hallmark of the CMA training, to the candidate(s) from the newcomers' cohort
who score(s) the highest mark on the National Exam.
The demand for professional accountants continues to rise. In the
Edmonton Metropolitan area, the number of positions for Financial auditors and
accountants is expected to increase by 2.7% per year, over the next five
years; representing this group as the twentieth, out of the "Top 20"
occupations predicted to experience the highest growth rates and number one
out of twenty in terms of the number of new positions that will be created
over the next five years, according to the Edmonton Economic Development
Corporation (EEDC).
