Celebrating the spirit of the Famous 5

    OTTAWA, Oct. 12 /CNW Telbec/ - A group of Ottawa women supported by
Enbridge will host a luncheon Oct. 17 honouring the six recipients of the 2007
Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case. That's just
one of the day's events.
    Anchored by a ceremony at Rideau Hall bestowing the awards to an as yet
undisclosed list of recipients, the luncheon brings them together for a panel
discussion moderated by Catherine Clark. Ms. Clark herself carries the history
of the Famous 5 as the daughter of Joe Clark, the Prime Minister from Alberta
who initiated the awards in 1979, the 50th anniversary of the Persons Case.

    Media are also invited to a special photo opportunity bringing together
the parliamentarians who helped bring the Women are Persons! monument to Hill.
Scheduled to join in are: Jim Abbott, Jean Augustine, Marlene Catterall,
Sheila Copps, Joyce Fairbairn, Hedy Fry, Alphonso Gagliano, Deb Grey,
Marjory LeBreton, Alexa McDonough, Vivienne Poy, Suzanne Tremblay,
Elsie Wayne. Also in attendance will be Famous 5 Founder, Frances Wright and
sculptor, Barbara Paterson.

    The Famous 5 Ottawa committee worked to have the Women are Persons!
monument placed on Parliament Hill, which was unveiled October 2000, and
honoured as Nation Builders on Canada's currency. The group now graces the
back of the $50 bill.

    Alberta women - Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Nellie McClung,
Henrietta Muir Edwards, and Irene Parlby - later known as the Famous 5 -
opened the doors of the Senate of Canada to women through their efforts known
today as the Persons Case.
