Celebrate Family Literacy Day

    The Learning Partnership reminds everyone of the importance of literacy
    in Canada

    TORONTO, Jan. 27 /CNW/ - The Learning Partnership, a not-for-profit
organization dedicated to championing a strong public education system in
Canada reminds everyone that today is Family Literacy Day.
    "Teaching literacy is the most crucial building block in the education of
our children", says Veronica Lacey, President & CEO of The Learning
Partnership. "Parents and guardians are a child's first teachers and we can
begin helping our children in a lifetime of learning by reading with them when
they are young."
    The Learning Partnership's Welcome to Kindergarten(TM) program is now
available in eight provinces and helps families prepare for school. The
reading and comprehension portion of the program allows pre-school children
and their families to experience the enjoyment of books together.
    Welcome to Kindergarten is an initiative to provide pre-school children
and their families with the resources and experiences to support early
learning and a smooth transition to formal education. The parent information
sheet is available in 23 languages.
    Before starting school, children across Canada are given preparatory
resources and experiences to position them for school success.
Parents/caregivers are invited to attend a workshop at their neighbourhood
school where they receive early literacy resources as part of the Welcome to
Kindergarten Program and learn strategies for using the resources with their
    "We encourage everyone to use today to begin reading with their children
and encouraging older children to read regularly. Reading skills will help
them in all other aspects of their education as well as later in life when
they join the nation's workforce," concluded Ms Lacey.
