MONTREAL, Sept. 19 /CNW/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) will honor Carrier Corp. today with its coveted Best-of-the-Best
Stratospheric Ozone Protection award in recognition of the company's
achievements in helping restore the Earth's protective ozone layer. Carrier is
a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
"We are truly honored that EPA is recognizing Carrier's environmental
leadership with such a prestigious award," said John Mandyck, Carrier's vice
president of government and international relations, who will accept the award
during ceremonies today in Montreal.
The awards presentation coincides with the 20th anniversary of the United
Nations Montreal Protocol, which calls for a global elimination of ozone
depleting substances such as chlorofluorcarbons (CFCs) and
hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) used in air-conditioning and refrigeration
"Environmental leading companies like Carrier demonstrate that global
environmental protection can go hand in hand with economic growth," said Bob
Meyers, principal deputy assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Air and
Geraud Darnis, president of Carrier Corp., said, "Carrier has been an
industry leader in environmental stewardship for decades. This award is yet
another testament to our ability to be an environmental champion."
In 1994, Carrier became the first company in the industry to phase-out
CFCs from air-conditioning systems worldwide -- two years ahead of
requirements in the U.S. and 16 years ahead of mandates in developing
In 1996, Carrier was first to offer non-ozone depleting commercial and
residential systems. Since then, Carrier has sold approximately 3 million non-
ozone depleting Puron(R) residential systems in North America.
In 2005, Carrier introduced the Evergreen(R) 23XRV variable speed screw
chiller using non-ozone depleting HFC-134a refrigerant. This commercial
product was a first by Carrier, employing new technology to achieve world-
class energy efficiency with zero compromise on ozone protection.
Carrier's environmental leadership extends beyond developing innovative
products designed for quality, reliability and the environment to the way
those products are manufactured. Since 1997, Carrier has doubled in size with
no increase in energy consumption.
"Green products start with how they're made in the first place," said
EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson said, "By embracing cooperation over
confrontation, EPA and our vital partners like Carrier are continuing to
create a better tomorrow by protecting the Earth's atmosphere today. We at EPA
join the global community in celebrating the anniversary of the Montreal
Protocol - a shining example of how human ingenuity, leadership and
determination can create a healthier, better world."
Best-of-the-Best award nominees were evaluated by the federal
Environmental Protection Agency staff and judged by an international panel
representing industry, government, and non-governmental organizations.
"The 2007 Best-of-the-Best Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award winners
have demonstrated sustained commitment to protection of our global
environment," added Meyers.
