Carbon Reduction Fund Launches: Canadian non-profit will secure high-quality offsets for the voluntary market

    TORONTO, Dec. 6 /CNW Telbec/ - The Carbon Reduction Fund, a new
not-for-profit organization, was launched today in Toronto. The goal of the
Fund is to be a dependable and ethical provider of high quality carbon offsets
to a select group of organizations that are taking action on their own carbon
footprints, and that voluntarily commit to meaningful reductions of GHG
The creation of the Fund was made possible due to the financial support
of Aeroplan, Canada's premier loyalty marketing company and primary initial
purchaser of offsets from the Fund. "It was the right time for us to take
action. We are currently quantifying our footprint and evaluating how we can
reduce our corporate emissions," say Aeroplan's Director, Corporate
Reputation, Michèle Meier. "We have also committed to offset 100% of the
carbon footprint resulting from our own business travel." In conjunction with
these internal efforts, Aeroplan unveiled a new carbon offset program for its
4 million members today. "We wanted our members to have the opportunity to
offset the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from their air travel." As a
symbol of its environmental commitment, Aeroplan is going one step further.
"To motivate our members to do the right thing, we are matching their offset
contributions by an additional 20%," Meier added.
"To make progress on climate change, we have to complement significant
reductions from large final emitters that should come through compliance
mechanisms with voluntary action by smaller emitters and individuals," says
Yvan Champagne, Managing Director of the Carbon Reduction Fund. "Aeroplan is
setting a great example for other leading organizations that recognize they
have an impact and want to take action. We hope we can convince other
progressive organizations to follow Aeroplan's lead and get on board."
The Fund's intent is to focus primarily on credits from domestic sources,
and to emphasize energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. It will
engage a variety of organizations and assist potential project developers
across Canada. The Fund will seek to set the bar for transparency across its
operations and project sources and has established an independent technical
advisory committee to help select high-quality projects. Adds Champagne, "By
working collaboratively with other players in the industry, we want to help
establish and maintain high standards in order to protect and grow the desire
for voluntary action."
Management services for the Carbon Reduction Fund will be provided by the
Summerhill Group, one of Canada's leading environmental market transformation
organizations. Summerhill Group has extensive experience in creating and
executing large-scale environmental programs that engage the public and
achieve tangible environmental improvements. "As part of a comprehensive
strategy to reduce the corporate environmental footprint, offsets can be an
important tool," says Summerhill Group CEO Ian Morton. "The timing is right -
there is a desire amongst many companies to do their part on this important
To support the initiative, the Carbon Reduction Fund has also launched
its website, This site will provide transparent,
accessible and up-to-date information on the policies and practices of the
Fund, as well as current information on its projects.
