Canadians to mark World Refugee Day on June 20

    OTTAWA, June 19 /CNW Telbec/ - The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and Canadian
aid organizations in cities across Canada will hold events to mark World
Refugee Day.
    "This internationally recognized day is being observed around the world
as a day of solidarity with the world's refugees to focus global attention not
only on their plight, but also on their determination to survive and on the
contributions they make to their host communities", said Jahanshah Assadi,
UNHCR Representative in Canada.
    In downtown Toronto at the Yonge-Dundas Square, the UN Refugee Agency and
prominent Canadian NGOs will provide a free festive event emceed by Canadian
Idol judge Farley Flex beginning at 12:00 a.m. Toronto City Mayor David
Miller, IRB Chairperson Brian Goodman and Dr. Ursula Franklin will make
appearances. A talented line-up of artists and dancers including Belinda
Brady, Divine Brown and Donné Roberts will provide entertainment.
    In Montreal, free entertainment, information stands and colorful displays
will take place at 4:00 p.m. at Place Louis Pasteur on St Denis Street. The
celebration will be a showcase of visual and performing arts including music,
dance, photography and painting.

    The UNHCR-sponsored events were made possible thanks to the generous
financial support of OSRAM SYLVANIA LTD and YMCA Montreal, as well as in-kind
support from Earth Water International, Clear Channel Outdoors, City of
Toronto, Starbucks, Pablo Rodrigues, Amnesty International Canada (section
francophone), ABP Location and UQAM School of Social Work.
