OTTAWA, May 21 /CNW Telbec/ - This spring, tens of thousands of Canadians
in cities across the country will join in the 25th annual World Partnership
Walk to increase awareness and raise funds to fight poverty in some of the
world's most isolated and impoverished places.
The Walk, which is an initiative of Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) and
its national network of volunteers, will take place over three consecutive
Sundays, starting May 31st, and is expected to involve some 70,000 walkers and
donors, and more than 900 corporate supporters.
Since the official campaign kick-off on March 6th, volunteers and
fundraisers have been mobilizing their resources to ensure that the 25th Walk
will be the most successful yet.
Over the past 24 years, the World Partnership Walk has raised more than
$45.5 million, including more than $5.5 million in 2008 to help impoverished
communities become self-reliant. All of the funds raised (100%) go directly to
international development initiatives. Administrative costs are covered
separately. The proceeds of the Walk help AKFC leverage additional support
from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and other major
donors. In this way, contributions by Canadians stretch even further to reach
communities in need.
This year, the Walk will take place in Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton,
Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal, Kitchener and London on May 31st; on June 7th in
Ottawa and June 14th in Calgary.
The World Partnership Walk provides an experience that is both meaningful
and fun for participants, through activities that inform, educate, celebrate
and entertain. Thereis still time to join and raise funds as an individual
Walk Ambassador, or to form a corporate or community team. Great gifts and
prizes are available at every level.
Registration is free and can be done securely and easily online by
visiting www.worldpartnershipwalk.com or by calling 1-800-267-2532.
