CPS issues position statement using old data - Safer trampoline design
ignored despite removing causes of 83% of injuries
TORONTO, Aug. 22 /CNW/ - Springfree Trampoline announced today it is
disappointed by the new Canadian Paediatric Society position statement on
trampolines as it fails to mention Springfree's revolutionary design which
eliminates 83% of the causes of trampoline related injuries.
Springfree Trampoline President Steven Holmes said, "We support the
intent of the position statement because traditional trampolines are
dangerous; but we are concerned however when the data used to develop the
position statement is from 2003 and earlier. Our design was introduced in
Canada in 2004 and customers, researchers and safety advocates from around the
world regularly tell us we have had significant impact in reducing trampoline
related injuries through the development of a safer trampoline, a 'no spring'
In 2004 Springfree Trampoline released the world's only radically new
trampoline design in the 70 years since George Nissan built his first
trampoline. By removing the springs and frame at the jumping surface and
introducing a flexible safety enclosure, Springfree Trampoline's soft-edge
design removes the danger zones which cause the majority of trampoline related
With an installed base of over 25,000 units in Canada, the Springfree is
now a statistically significant part of the trampoline population, but one
which experts have yet to factor into their research or data analysis. Holmes
went on to say, "Claiming all trampolines are inherently dangerous and should
not be used in backyards is incorrect when such a significant design advance
has not been reviewed. Independent testing has proven that the Springfree
Trampolines have a soft-edge that if hit from a fall height of 1.5m that there
is less than a 1% chance of injury."
"It has been difficult to convince the media and physicians that we are
doing something completely different," said Holmes "but we have been thrilled
by the support of those individuals and independent paediatricians that truly
understand the impact we have made in backyard safety. The support from two
time Canadian Olympic medalist Karen Cockburn and our customers across the
country confirms we are making a difference."
Springfree Trampoline supports the CPS position statement on traditional
trampolines, but maintains that the Springfree design is fundamentally
different and demands independent review.
