Canadian News Photographers Honoured

VANCOUVER, March 20 /CNW/ - It can be argued that there is no greater
power in journalism than the straight-forward truthfulness of a single image.
It is in that spirit that the News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC)
is pleased to recognize the excellence represented in submissions by 123 of
Canada's outstanding photojournalists in announcing the nominations in the
second annual National Pictures of the Year (NPOY) awards competition.
More than 2,200 images from across Canada were entered in this year's
competition, representing a spectacular body of work. A prestigious panel of
judges, including top North American photojournalists and photo editors, were
tasked with judging the entries.
The "still photo" category judges include Graeme Roy, Director of News
Photography - The Canadian Press; Peter Bregg, Photo Editor/Photographer,
Hello Magazine and Bob Carroll, retired, Photo Editor, The Windsor Star. The
Judging Chief is Phill Snel, Deputy Photo Editor, The National Post.
The new Multimedia category judges include Jeff Peeler, Frantic Films,
Cecil Rosner, CBC and John White, The Winnipeg Free Press.
Images were submitted and judged in 12 different categories, including
Canadian Photojournalist of the Year and Canadian Photograph of the Year.
The nominated images can be viewed at:
The winners will be announced during the NPAC's National Pictures of the
Year Gala event, which will take place April 19 in Vancouver.
The 2007 Canadian Photojournalist of the Year and 2007 Canadian
Photograph of the Year will each be awarded a $2000.00 top prize (Sponsored by
The Canadian Press and Reuters, respectively). Other category winners will be
awarded $500.00 for First Place, $200.00 for Second Place and $100.00 for
Third Place.
