Canadian Festival Coalition Applauds Federal Budget

QUEBEC, March 23 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Festivals Coalition applauds
the Conservative Government's decision to provide $30 million per year in
support for Canadian festivals as announced by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty
in the federal budget. This initiative recognizes the significant contribution
of this sector to the Canadian economy.
Recently, many festivals have been suffering from lack of stable and
predictable funding. For the past three years, the Coalition had been
requesting additional support from the federal government to assist festival
organizations that make a significant economic, cultural and social impact on
Canadian communities.
A healthy festival sector involves thousands of volunteers and motivates
international tourists to visit Canada by offering unique, world-class events
that enable them to experience Canadian life. Communities that host festivals
benefit from improved quality of life and increased tourism, taxes revenue,
other economic spin-offs. As a nation, the quantity and quality of our
festival celebrations are a reflection of our spirit.
The Coalition appreciates the Conservative Government's understanding of
the festival sector's importance. Coalition members and their representative
bodies offer their support and expertise to the Minister of Canadian Heritage
Minister Bev Oda and her departmental officials as they work to develop the
framework, criteria, and performance based measures so that Canadian taxpayers
from all regions receive the best value for their money.
