Canadian Diabetes Association announces cross-country Live Smart Diabetes Expos

TORONTO, March 28 /CNW/ - The Canadian Diabetes Association is pleased to
announce the 2nd Annual Live Smart Diabetes Expo series in partnership with
its national co-presenting sponsor, Shoppers Drug Mart. Each Expo is a
one-stop shop for diabetes-related information and learning, enabling people
affected by the disease to gain the knowledge necessary to manage their
While many Canadians have a basic understanding of what diabetes is; few
truly understand the serious nature of the disease. If left untreated, or
improperly managed, diabetes can result in heart disease, blindness, kidney
failure and amputation.
"Fortunately, a lifelong commitment to good diabetes management can
reduce the risk of associated complications," said Steve Nowak, Vice
President, Fund Development of the Canadian Diabetes Association. "However,
committing to eat well, control your weight, exercise and manage your blood
sugars on a daily basis is not only overwhelming, it's confusing at times.
That's why we're hosting the Live Smart Diabetes Expo."
The 2nd Annual Live Smart Diabetes Expos will bring together a spectrum
of diabetes information, products, resources and speakers under one roof
making the search for knowledge as easy as possible.
"We believe that ongoing knowledge is the first step in the lifelong
commitment to good diabetes management," Nowak added. "And we're proud to team
up with Co-presenter Shoppers Drug Mart and our national lead sponsor, Pfizer
Canada Inc., to offer information, experts and products to Canadians living
with diabetes."
"We are proud to again partner with the Canadian Diabetes Association to
provide exceptional diabetes education through the Live Smart Diabetes Expos.
Offered across Canada, these information forums raise awareness and
understanding of diabetes management and are a logical extension of the
services Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacists provide in our stores everyday," said
Virginia Cirocco, Senior Vice President, Pharmacy, Shoppers Drug Mart. "With
over 100 Certified Diabetes Educators across the country, Shoppers Drug Mart
continues to positively influence the health, well being and quality of life
for people affected by diabetes. These educational expos, combined with the
innovative tools and services of our new and enhanced HealthWATCH will make a
positive difference in how Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacists can help these
patients better manage their health, for their life."
"Pfizer Canada is committed to helping Canadians manage their diabetes,
through education, diabetes-related experts, and resources," says John Helou,
Vice-President, Government and Stakeholder Relations, Pfizer Canada. "We are
very proud to partner with the Canadian Diabetes Association and Shoppers Drug
Mart to host the Live Smart Diabetes Expo, thereby offering important care and
support to the many Canadians living with diabetes."
Anyone affected by diabetes should attend a Live Smart Diabetes Expo.
That includes: people living with diabetes, those at risk along with their
families, friends, caregivers, teachers and employers. Experts from the
diabetes health community will present on topics ranging from making sense of
the food we eat to finding the motivation within to accept the personal
challenge known as diabetes.
Each Expo will feature workshops where participants can gain information
on topics ranging from nutrition to insulin pumps to stress management and
foot care. Expo attendees will have an opportunity to meet with industry
experts from all sectors of the diabetes industry - consumer products,
retailers, pharmaceutical companies, fitness facilities and related non-profit
organizations to name a few. Through their continued support, these experts
demonstrate an ongoing commitment to improving the lives of those affected by
diabetes and an ongoing commitment to the work of the Canadian Diabetes
