Canadian Caregiver Coalition welcomes discussion on family caregiving

OTTAWA, le 22 sept. /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Caregiver Coalition (CCC)
is pleased to see continued dialogue on family caregiving in Canada through
the announcement by Prime Minister Harper on Friday. The Prime Minister's
commitment to measures to ease the financial burden for family caregivers
caring for a loved one with mental or physical disabilities is an important
first step to demonstrating the importance placed on caregiving as a social
value in our country.
The CCC urges Canada's Federal leaders to remember Canadians who are in
need of support because of age, disabling medical conditions, chronic injury,
or long term illness. The economic value of caregivers' unpaid eldercare to
the Canadian economy is estimated to be over $5 billion and between
$6-9 billion for all caregivers' (chronic and palliative care) unpaid work.(1)
Caregivers of persons with chronic conditions spend more than
15.6 million hours per week collectively at their caring work.(2)
Caregivers can be found across all income strata. However, it has been
reported that they typically have household incomes below the national
average. The Canadian Caregiver Coalition calls on all parties in the Federal
election to commit to providing meaningful support for family caregivers,
including those who are in need of support because of age, disabling medical
conditions, chronic injury, long term illness or disability. This means that
upon forming the government, there would be adoption of a comprehensive
Canadian Caregiving Strategy which includes:

    1. Recognition of the importance of family caregiving in policy, practice
       and legislation

    2. Provision of comprehensive caregiver support which includes financial
measures, services for caregivers based on their assessed needs, and
flexible work environments for those caregivers who are also employed

    3. Research to enable evidence based decision making.

The Canadian Caregiver Coalition is a diverse group of national and
provincial organizations from across Canada that join with caregivers, service
providers, policy makers and other stakeholders to identify and respond to the
needs of caregivers in Canada.
The vision of the Canadian Caregivers Coalition is a Canada that
recognizes and respects the integral role of family caregivers in society, and
supports this role with the understanding that it is not a substitute for
public responsibility in health and social care.
