TORONTO, Oct. 26 /CNW/ - Jackie Richardson (Toronto) and Gordon Tootoosis
(Cutknife, Saskatchewan) will be presented with Life Membership in Canadian
Actors' Equity Association (Equity) in recognition of their distinguished
careers in the performing arts. "Once again our selection committee was
challenged to select deserving candidates from across Equity's many genres and
from a pool of so many talented candidates," said Equity President Allan
Teichman. Jackie has led a distinguished career performing on most of Canada's
professional stages. Gordon, moved by the lack of artistic opportunities for
aboriginal young performers was a founding member of the Saskatchewan Native
Theatre Company in the heart of Saskatoon's inner city. "Jackie and Gordon are
both commanding performers, deeply committed to their communities, Canadian
culture and to artistic excellence," continued Teichman.
Equity member Daphne Goldrick (Vancouver) will receive the Larry McCance
Award for her outstanding contribution to the Association. In 1978 Daphne
spearheaded the drive to open Equity's western office. According to Teichman
"Her vision, perseverance and commitment to the Association was the force
behind establishing Equity as a truly national organization."
Playwright and novelist Tomson Highway is the 2007 recipient of Honorary
Membership in Equity, awarded in recognition of his outstanding contribution
to the performing arts. "Tomson is a Canadian icon having made a tremendous
contribution to the development of Aboriginal theatre both at home and around
the world. We are proud to now include him in our membership," said Teichman.
Additionally the 2007 Stage West - Equity Emerging Theatre Artist Award
winner will be announced on Sunday, October 28th at 8:00 p.m. Andrew Kushnir
will be announced as this year's winner of the $2,000 cash prize. The Award,
initiated in celebration of Equity's silver anniversary in 2001 and sponsored
by Stage West Theatre Restaurants, recognizes an Equity member of three years
or less who has made a significant contribution and impression as an artist.
Andrew is a multi-talented performer, already notable in the theatre scene
Equity is the voice of professional artists working in live performance
in English Canada. It is a national artists' association representing more
than 5,500 performers, directors, choreographers, fight directors and stage
managers working in theatre, opera and dance from coast to coast.
