Canada's New Government announces reconstruction of berth no 2 and the fishing wharf at La Tabatière

LA TABATIERE, QC, Jan. 31 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon,
Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable
Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced the award of a
$5,878,000 contract to Construction EBC Inc. to rebuild berth no 2 and the
fishing wharf at La Tabatière harbour.
"This investment demonstrates our government's commitment to support
infrastructure in remote communities," said Minister Cannon. "The work to be
done will ensure that this essential infrastructure will continue to play a
vital role in the local economy."
"Fishery activities are essential to the economy of Quebec's coastal
communities," added Minister Hearn. "The Government of Canada is committed to
supporting communities like La Tabatière and helping local businesses, workers
and fishers by providing safe and efficient harbour facilities."
The planned reconstruction of berth no 2 and the fishing wharf will
involve building a new concrete deck and rock-anchored pile and sheet-piling
wall, as well as installing lighting, bollards, ladders, guard rails, fenders
and a cathodic protection system.
The harbour facilities at La Tabatière are mainly used to deliver and
ship merchandise and seafood products to and from the wharf.
The La Tabatière wharf is classified as a remote port under Transport
Canada's National Marine Policy. It consists of two berths owned and operated
by Transport Canada. The western end of the wharf belongs to Fisheries and
Oceans Canada's Small Craft Harbours Program. The La Tabatière port authority
manages and operates this facility, which is used exclusively by fishers.
This joint project between Transport Canada and Fisheries and Oceans
Canada will provide this community with updated transportation facilities,
which will serve local people, businesses, workers and fishers.
