    Former federal Minister of International Trade and former Secretary of
    State, International Financial Institutions, Jim Peterson appointed as

State, International Financial Institutions, Jim Peterson is joining the firm
as Counsel.

    As a former Minister of International Trade (2003-2006), Mr. Peterson has
expertise in trade policy and experience in trade disputes. While Minister, he
represented Canada at WTO's Doha round of trade negotiations, focused on
expanding trade and investment in leading emerging markets including Brazil,
Russia, India and China, and dealt with complex issues related to trade with
Canada's NAFTA partners, the European Union, the Middle East and the Americas.
As Secretary of State, International Financial Institutions, (1997-2002),
Mr. Peterson was instrumental in piloting the most recent round of Bank Act
reforms with Parliament, handled the insurance industry de-mutualization file
and sponsored a wide variety of other important initiatives including money
laundering legislation.
    Mr. Peterson was a special adviser to the Federal Finance Minister on the
single National Securities Regulator issue from 2002 to 2003, was Member of
Parliament for the Willowdale riding in Toronto for 23 years and was the Chair
of the Finance Committee from 1993 to 1997, completing a number of major
studies including a review of the GST.
    Before entering public life, Mr. Peterson practiced international tax and
business law in Toronto and was a consultant for the United Nations Industrial
Development Organization.
    Mr. Peterson holds a Doctorate in Civil Law from McGill University, a
Master of Laws from Columbia University, a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of
Laws from the University of Western Ontario, a diploma from l'Académie de
Droit International in The Hague and a Diplôme d'Etudes de la Civilisation
Française from La Sorbonne in Paris.
    Mr. Peterson is the author of numerous articles and studies for Canadian
and foreign publications on international business, investment, taxation and
fiscal policy. Mr. Peterson will be based out of the Toronto office and serve
Fasken Martineau clients in Canada and around the world.
