Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Nunavut Housing Corporation hold round-table discussion on housing in Iqaluit

IQALUIT, NU, June 22 /CNW/ - Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
(CMHC), in partnership with Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC), held an
industry round-table discussion on housing with key industry stakeholders in
Iqaluit yesterday. The meeting included a presentation of the results of
CMHC's latest Iqaluit rental housing survey and was followed by a NHC
presentation regarding their programs and activities that may affect and shape
Iqaluit housing.
CMHC's 2006 survey showed rental vacancies remained very tight in
Iqaluit. Despite the lack of vacant units, rent increases between the fall of
2005 and 2006 were relatively moderate. With the exception of those living in
bachelor units, most saw a rent increase of less than three per cent from 2005
One key outcome of the meeting was the creation of a formal housing
industry working group. The group will be represented by private industry and
various levels of government with a mandate to facilitate objective
discussions regarding local issues in the areas of land management, building
and development regulations, and to encourage the sharing of information.
Terry Ma, Corporate Representative for CMHC, is encouraged by the creation of
this group. "The round table has successfully pulled together housing
stakeholders to share information and discuss issues," remarked Ma, "Outside
these round-table discussions the industry does not have any such forum to
bring forward and resolve issues on an ongoing basis and this is what the
working group will do." Mr. Ma hopes the group will hold its first meeting
this summer.
Peter Scott, President of the Nunavut Housing Corporation, found the
industry round-table discussion to be very valuable and welcomed further
initiatives. "NHC looks forward to future partnerships that will provide
valuable information to potential homeowners and housing stakeholders in
Iqaluit and Nunavut" said Scott.
