CAA SCO Driven to Help Communities Recycle

BRAMPTON, ON, Sept. 26, 2011 /CNW/ - Your dead batteries, old tires and used motor oil are just sitting in the corner of your garage or shed collecting dust and taking up space. They don't belong in the blue bin or at the curb with your trash. That's why CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) and Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS) are offering to take them off your hands at no charge and make sure they are disposed of safely.

During our 2011 RecycleDrive, you will be able to drop off your drained car, household and marine batteries, used motor oil and old tires (limit four without rims) at one of 15 participating garages, including J & A Auto Service in Brampton and Freeway Auto Service in Rexdale. The week-long eco-friendly initiative runs from September 26 - October 1, 2011.

"We encourage all motorists to take advantage of this opportunity to get rid of their dead batteries, old tires and used motor oil in an environmentally friendly way. By recycling these items you will help keep harmful chemicals out of landfills where they can contaminate soil and groundwater," said Gina Banwait, Community Relations Specialist, CAA SCO.

"This is the first year that OTS and CAA have partnered to offer Ontarians a convenient way to responsibly recycle their old tires. The fall is a perfect time to begin thinking about your winter tires and disposing of any that are worn," said Andrew Horsman, Executive Director, Ontario Tire Stewardship. "These collections events are just one example of the great work being done year round by Ontario Tire Stewardship and CAA to benefit the environment. The Used Tires Program is also creating green jobs for Ontarians and contributing to the development of new, more sustainable consumer products."

As a thank you for doing your part to help preserve the planet, we will send the first 100 participants at each location home with a FREE pack of yard waste bags. Meanwhile, CAA members can enter for a chance to WIN a set of four new winter tires, five free oil changes or a set of recycled rubber car mats.

When CAA members recycle their car batteries CAA will plant a tree on their behalf and take care of it for five years. Through our Autogreen program, 1.8 million liters of oil has been collected and re-refined. This saves 5, 800 tonnes of greenhouse gases from being released into the air.
