Brings subscriber context to "soft touch" provisioning of WiMAX devices
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 12 /CNW/ - Bridgewater Systems (TSX:BWC) today
announced an Over-The-Air Provisioning (OTA) solution, which enables service
providers to support dynamic provisioning of devices on WiMAX networks.
Working in conjunction with Open Mobile Alliance Device Management (OMA-DM)
compliant servers, the Bridgewater(R) solution recognizes when subscribers and
devices are on the network to facilitate seamless provisioning and firmware
updates over the air, thereby reducing service introduction costs and enabling
immediate subscriber access to WiMAX services.
In contrast to traditional networks where devices are sold and
provisioned in-store by operators or their partners, some device vendors plan
to support an open model whereby WiMAX-enabled devices can be offered without
a direct relationship to a specific service provider. Over the air device
provisioning provides a cost-effective means for service providers to
accomplish rapid service turn up and frequent firmware over the air (FOTA)
updates. However, service providers need a comprehensive approach to device
management that enables a dynamic view of all subscribers and devices on the
network, including current configuration or firmware load, and a scalable
approach to identify, register, track and update the wide array of devices
which will be connected to WiMAX networks.
"The mix of retail business models for WiMAX equipment purchases by
consumers, and a need for operators to securely, cost-effectively and easily
provision and support these consumers necessitates an OTA solution that can
scale to meet nationwide WiMAX deployments," said Monica Paolini, founder and
president of Senza Fili Consulting.
"Over the air provisioning is a key service control capability for WiMAX
service providers who want to introduce new business models and light touch
services based on open access", commented Farshid Mohammadi, vice president of
product line management at Bridgewater Systems.
The Bridgewater solution serves subscriber requests to access the WiMAX
network to determine subscriber identity, if a device should be given network
access, and whether the device requires registration or a firmware upgrade.
The solution features a real time subscriber context database which can share
dynamic data such as location, presence, IP address, roaming status, and
registration status with the OMA-DM server. This subscriber context enables
the OMA-DM server to upgrade the user device software with a zero-touch
operation for both new and existing subscribers.
Bridgewater is working with a number of device management platform
vendors and is currently implementing this solution with a number of WiMAX
