TORONTO, Aug. 15 /CNW/ - Brian Utley from Calgary made waves this morning
at Toronto's Ashbridge's Bay, Summerville Pool earning the coveted title of
2007 National Cannonball Champion at the Trident Splash National Cannonball
Championship. Beating out nine finalists from across the country who had the
cannonballs to compete, Utley took the Champion title, bragging rights and a
cash prize of $2,000!
Celebrating its third year, the Trident Splash National Cannonball
Championship is the summer's coolest competition for Canucks. Regional finals
were held in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal. Cannonballers
also entered the competition at www.cannonballchampionship.ca.
At today's Championship, the finalists splashed their way into
cannonballing history. Each performed three cannonballs off a 5 metre platform
for a panel of judges. In full costume, the competitors brought personal style
and flare, spins, summersaults, splats, and fantastic cannonballs to every
jump - always ensuring the integrity of a full tuck.
A Splash of Summer Fun!
"The competition was fierce and everyone was on their game - I feel so
honoured to have won the title and to have beat out so many skilled ballers,"
says Brian Utley, who won the title with his old school cannonball style and
demonstrated today that it's all about the splash. "I would like to thank
Trident Splash for its support of cannonballing and helping it splash onto the
national scene. All of my training really paid off and I already feel set to
start training for next year to defend the title!" Utley is a former two time
World Cannonball Champion in 1981 and 1982.
"We are thrilled to once again host the Trident Splash National
Cannonball Championship and to have such skilled competitors from coast to
coast, including our first ever female contestant," says Tim Boughtflower,
Senior Brand Manager, Trident, Cadbury Adams Canada. "Trident Splash is all
about having fun and making a big splash, and what better way then with the
Cannonball Championship. This event is the perfect way to celebrate summer and
introduce our three new great-tasting Trident Splash flavours including Citrus
