Brampton child to receive Fire Safety Award

TORONTO, May 27 /CNW/ - Zachary Machado of Brampton will receive a Fire
Safety Action Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at the
Fire Safety Awards ceremony on June 3, 2009 in Toronto. The annual ceremony
recognizes outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in
As five-year-old Zachary worked on a computer in the lower level of the
family home one day last December, his grandmother was wrapping a present on
the upper level. Suddenly, the wrapping paper she was using touched an ignited
candle nearby and the smoke alarm activated. On hearing the smoke alarm,
Zachary got up from the computer, put on his boots and went to the family's
pre-arranged meeting place: the neighbour's house. He knocked on the door,
told the neighbour about the smoke alarm activating and requested that 9-1-1
be called. Zachary's actions that day have since influenced his grandmother to
use only battery-operated candles in her home.
"Based on fire safety lessons he had learned at preschool, Zachary knew
what to do in this fire situation and did not hesitate to act," said Ontario
Fire Marshal Pat Burke. "His actions underline the importance of developing
and practicing home fire escape plans with all occupants of the home to ensure
they know what do in a fire situation."

Each year Fire Safety Action Awards are awarded to young children and
teenagers who have actively demonstrated fire safety behaviours they have
learned. Fire departments throughout the province nominated individuals and
organizations for this year's awards; 20 recipients were selected. The
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Rick Bartolucci and
Fire Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon ceremony at the
Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto.
