VANCOUVER, Feb. 11 /CNW/ - At a recent breakfast session hosted by the
BCAMA, over 150 marketers attended to hear Steve Mossop, President, Market
Research Canada West with Ipsos Reid and Angela Scardillo, Vice President,
Client Services with DDB Vancouver, 'Managing Director, DDB Kid Think' provide
the most current research on teens and the internet. Both shared their
insights on Interactive Teens (ages 12 to 17) - what they are doing on-line
and how to reach them.
The research from Ipsos Reid shows that the internet is important in
teens' social life. They use it to socialize and connect with friends, as an
'entertainment vehicle', and to catch up on what they have missed in areas
such as the entertainment world and sports. The internet also allows youth to
have a voice, and possibly become 'famous'. Their research indicates that the
top three activities youth are doing on-line are socializing, downloading
music and gaming.
"Young people don't separate their lives into on-line and off-line, so
marketers shouldn't separate their marketing initiatives that way either,"
said Angela Scardillo. She emphasized that marketers should "use on-line
marketing as part of a holistic approach to reach this audience."
To reach the youth market Angela recommends following the six points:
1. Be simple and relevant
2. Be entertaining
3. Give youth a voice
4. Let them personalize
5. Make them want to share it
6. Be credible
Angela pointed out that "If you do it right, your brand will become part
of their lives."
