VANCOUVER, Feb. 10 /CNW/ - A healthy mind helps you lose weight, sleep well and live longer! Well-being is just as much about taking care of your mind as your body.  In fact mental health actually is at the heart of a healthy life. February is Psychology Month. This is the sixth annual Psychology Month in Canada and the British Columbia Psychological Association, along with Psychological Associations across the country, has the goal to inform the public of the role that psychology and mental health plays in their daily life.

In British Columbia, during the month of February, in addition to their daily responsibilities, many psychologists are undertaking activities in order to help individuals prevent psychological problems and develop habits that foster wellness.   The BC Psychological Association (BCPA) has launched its new website, www.psychologists.bc.ca, which offers a free referral service, a blog on topics of interest to the public and health practitioners, as well as various other resources for the public. The Website also lists a variety of events that will take place throughout the province during psychology month and throughout the year. Also, on February 18th, BC Psychological Association is holding its first ever public awards dinner. This event, which will recognize BC Psychologists who have made significant contributions to British Columbians and throughout the world, will also feature presentations by Dr Gabor Mate and Dr Julio Montaner. Details about this event and others are available at www.psychologists.bc.ca.

FEBRUARY IS PSYCHOLOGY MONTH: The goal of Psychology Month is to generate awareness of, and interest in, the diverse roles psychology plays— from private practitioners, academics and scientists to psychologists in health, criminal justice, schools and businesses. During Psychology Month groups across Canada are organizing public education and outreach activities to share with the public what it is they do and how it contributes to the overall well-being of the community.

With over 700 members across British Columbia we represent a major, valuable resource. Since 1938, the BCPA has represented psychologists in British Columbia. It is a voluntary body and is committed to advancing the delivery and availability of Psychological Services along with promoting the psychological well being of all British Columbians.
