Barrie child to receive Fire Safety Award

TORONTO, May 27 /CNW/ - Acelyne Bailie of Barrie will receive a Fire
Safety Action Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at the
Fire Safety Awards ceremony on June 3, 2009 in Toronto. The annual ceremony
recognizes outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in
In the early afternoon on April 26, 2009, eight-year-old Acelyne entered
her residential apartment building with two friends and noticed two older
girls setting a newspaper fire in the stairwell of the building. Before the
girls had a chance to gather more newspaper to fuel the fire, Acelyne
confronted them. The two girls threatened and warned Acelyne not to tell
anyone about their actions, however, even amid the tremendous peer pressure,
Acelyne ran to tell the Superintendent. Although the girls had vanished by the
time Acelyne returned with the Superintendent, she was still able to give a
full description and the names of the girls to the police, who eventually
found them.
"Had it not been for Acelyne's actions, there could have been a very
different outcome in this story," said Ontario Fire Marshal Pat Burke.
"Acelyne did everything right by having the courage to confront the two girls
and by notifying the Superintendent, who contacted police."

Each year Fire Safety Action Awards are awarded to young children and
teenagers who have actively demonstrated fire safety behaviours they have
learned. Fire departments throughout the province nominated individuals and
organizations for this year's awards; 20 recipients were selected. The
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Rick Bartolucci and
Fire Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon ceremony at the
Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto.
