Barrett Expands its National Broadband Reach

Acquisitions of Rural WiMAX Spectrum and Satellite Capacity Position
Barrett as Canada's Rural Broadband Leader

WOODSTOCK, NB, Aug. 28 /CNW/ - Barrett Xplore Inc. is pleased to announce
that it has expanded the reach of its Xplornet high-speed broadband Internet
service to approximately 4 million rural and underserved Canadians. 3.5 GHz
WiMAX spectrum, covering over 2 million Canadians located across Alberta,
Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick, has been acquired from MIPPS Inc.
When combined with its existing spectrum in Saskatchewan, British Columbia and
the Northwest Territories, approximately 4 million rural and underserved
Canadians are now covered by the WiMAX spectrum used for Xplornet's urban
quality broadband service. In addition, Barrett Xplore Inc. has recently
expanded its satellite capacity to now enable delivery of broadband service to
200,000 customers living almost anywhere in Canada.
"These considerable investments in licensed spectrum and satellite
capacity demonstrate Barrett's commitment to rural broadband and strengthens
our ability to reach rural Canadian households with cost effective, high-speed
Internet," said John Maduri, CEO of Barrett Xplore Inc. "These assets are the
critical ingredients in our unique and successful hybrid business model aimed
at delivering broadband service to all rural Canadians."
While Barrett continues with its rural broadband mission, MIPPS Inc. is
pursuing its own business plans. "Strategically, this deal with Barrett Xplore
Inc. fits because we plan to focus on the urban business model," said Joe
Boutros, President of MIPPS Inc. "Our ongoing relationship and cooperation
agreement will allow both Barrett Xplore Inc. and MIPPS customers to benefit
from our respective WiMAX plans."
