Baie-des-Sables wind farm: more than $85 million in regional economic benefits

LONGUEUIL, QC, June 4 /CNW Telbec/ - Cartier Wind Energy (BDS) inc.
(Cartier BDS) is pleased to announce that the economic benefits related to the
development and the construction of the Baie-des-Sables wind farm exceeded
Hydro-Québec Distribution's minimum requirements. Approximately 52 per cent of
the wind farm's total costs were spent on materials and labour in the Gaspé
Peninsula and MRC of Matane region (the 'designated region') and 64 per cent
in Québec. More than $85 million was spent in the designated region and more
than $105 million in Québec.
"Social and economic partnerships with people and companies located in
the region are very important for Cartier BDS. Our business philosophy aims to
optimize the regional benefits by favouring the use of the expertise and
services in the region where we develop, construct and operate our wind
farms," said Gilles Lefançois, Chairman of Cartier's Board of Directors.
"The tower and blade manufacturing facilities that were built for this
project in the designated region played a significant part in the success of
Hydro-Québec Distribution's first call for tenders. More than 500 permanent
jobs were created in the region," said Finn Greflund, President of Cartier
Cartier BDS has presented Hydro-Québec Distribution with a final report
on the regional and Québec content related to the construction of the
Baie-des-Sables wind farm. The call for tenders requirements were 40 per cent
of the total development and construction costs. Hydro-Québec Distribution
will use an external auditing firm to verify the report.
The Baie-des-Sables wind farm consists of 73 wind turbines with an
installed capacity of 109.5 MW. Commercially in-service in 2006, it is the
first project to be completed under Hydro-Québec Distribution's first wind
energy call for tenders.
Cartier Wind Energy, headquartered in Longueuil, won 739.5 megawatt (MW)
in wind energy projects in Hydro-Québec Distribution's first wind energy call
for tenders for projects that will be developed from 2006 to 2012. These
projects represent a private investment of more than $1.1 billion. Cartier
Wind Energy is a partnership of TransCanada Corporation and Innergex Power
Income Fund for the Baie-des-Sables and the Anse-à-Valleau wind farms.
TransCanada Corporation and Innergex Renewable Energy Inc. are partners for
